It’s a bird….
It’s a plane….
It’s coffee with essential vitamins and nutrients with a longer lasting buzz!
This healthy, easy and incredibly tasty coffee goes by a completely different name in the paleo world but I termed it “Supercoffee.”
Because it turns me into WonderWoman on a daily basis.
This week I’m going to teach you how to make a glorious cup of Supercoffee, while revealing my tips and tricks to cut down on your prep time. Because any coffee recipe that takes more than five minutes to make is pretty much dead to me….
I tried my first cup of Supercoffee years ago and it has been a staple in my household ever since. It’s simple, cheap, healthy AND you get to eat butter at 7 a.m. WHAT COULD BE BETTER?
And did I mention it was good for you? Here are five good reasons why you need to be adding this scrumptious coffee recipe into your daily routine!
- Black coffee is full of essential vitamins and provides a whole host of health benefits.
Finally there is scientific research to support my daily addiction. Black coffee contains a number of essential vitamins and nutrients like Vitamin B2, B5, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin. In addition, several studies have confirmed that regular coffee drinkers are at a decreased risk for chronic disease like Type II diabetes, as well as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
After your morning coffee do you ever get that floaty, giddy, “I’m-walking-but-can’t-feel-my-legs kind of feeling?” That’s your brain on coffee. It actually affects the neurotransmitters in the brain and helps to ward off depression.
2. Supercoffee contains a number of healthy fats that are good for your heart and your mind!
Supercoffee contains grass-fed butter and coconut oil, which are high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. The laundry list of health benefits bestowed by these fatty acids would take up this entire page, but some of the highlights include the ability to make you smarter, happier and less prone to disease. Omega-3 and Omega-6 play a crucial role in brain function and cognitive development and those who are deficient may experience everything from heart problems to severe mood swings and depression. In addition, these essential fatty acids reduce inflammation in the body and consequently reduce the risk of certain chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease and arthritis.
Well, I am living proof that Omega-3’s and Omega-6’s are kind of a big deal. Obviously, I consume mass amounts of healthy fats through my daily dose of SuperCoffee, but I also take a fish oil supplement with a high amount of Omegas. It has significantly reduced my arthritis symptoms and depression associated with my Lyme disease. In fact, it has helped me so much that when I forget my daily dose or run out of my beloved fish oil, the burning pins and needles in my hands and feet serve as a perfect reminder to get back on the Omega train!
3. Supercoffee can help you lose weight. #YAS
Supercoffee, when combined with a low-carb diet, can help you lose weight. Even though Supercoffee is high in fat, it contains friendly fats that are utilized for energy rather than adding pounds to your waistline. This is something that I can really get behind–especially as bikini season approaches and I feel like I would rather get my teeth drilled than get into a swimsuit. In addition, drinking a cup of Supercoffee will help you feel fuller for a longer period of time and help you to avoid those mid-morning snack attacks.
4. Supercoffee has great flavor without added sugar or dairy.
There is more and more research concluding that refined sugar, rather than fat, is actually to blame for our frightening obesity epidemic in this country. When you add sugar to your coffee, it increases the caloric content and consequently reduces the nutritional value. Starting your day off with a good clean coffee buzz is so much better than a sugar-laden time bomb that will leave you bloated and hungover by 2 p.m.
And speaking of “good clean coffee buzz….”
5. Supercoffee gives you that kick in the pants that we all could use in the morning!
So, here we are. The main reason that Supercoffee gives me life (and makes me a better wife, mother and human). It has a crapload of caffeine. Not the shaky, “feel-like-your-head-is-not-attached-to-your-body” kind of caffeine, but more like you just strapped on a jet pack and are ready to clean your kitchen 50 times over while simultaneously brushing your kid’s teeth and cleaning out your underwear drawer.
In addition, research has shown that coffee improves intellectual and physical stamina and even makes your colon happy! Have you ever seen those shirts that read, “Coffee. Poop. Repeat.” There couldn’t be a more true statement.
So here is what you’ll need:
1. 1 tablespoon grass-fed butter:
I like the brand KerryGold which is an organic, grass-fed butter that is made in Ireland. You can get it at most health food and grocery stores (they even carry it in bulk at Costco!). Grass-fed and organic butter is a must here because it ensures that your butter is not filled with any unnecessary pesticides or contaminants that could compromise the health benefits of your Supercoffee.
2. Coconut Oil:
Now the original recipe calls for pure MCT oil, and while it is extremely good for you and contains more nutrients that actual coconut oil, I do not care for the taste. And to be honest, regular coconut oil is pretty darn nutritious. And tastes delicious. Look for cold-pressed, unrefined and organic.
Here is my favorite brand:
3. Coffee (duh!)
And you guessed it…the third ingredient is coffee! Now…not just any old coffee will do. To receive the greatest health benefits from ground coffee, try to find beans that are grown at a high-altitude, are a single blend (rather than a blend of different beans) and of course, organic. With coffee you want to avoid pesticide exposure and the creation of mycotoxins. High-altitude, organic, single blend beans are your best bet.
I absolutely adore Peak Performance coffee. Pictured left. The taste is amazing and the makers are committed to growing the cleanest, healthiest beans on the market. And did I mention it is delicious? Give it a shot!
Now that you got all your ingredients, here is what you do:
- Make the coffee according to package instructions. I usually use 2 tablespoons in my amazing, convenient and cheap Brewologist pour over contraption that allows me to make coffee without running water through plastic or creating unnecessary waste! And it is easy. Just warm some water up on the stove, pour it into a mug, put the grinds in the Brewologist and pour water over the top.
- Put all ingredients into a blender of Vitamix. This will make it frothy and delightful.
